The Indian
Ocean, lying to the north and south of the equator, is bordered
by the African and Asian continents to the west, north, and north-east;
by Australia to the southeast; and along the southern border,
it merges into the Southern Ocean and the continent of Antarctica.
There are several groups of small islands off the coasts of Africa
and Asia, as well as the Indonesian archipelago to the east. Small
Islands Voice activities have started in a number of the smaller
islands. There are many international, regional and national governmental
and non-governmental agencies operating in the region in the fields
of communications, environment and development.
