Presentation
on the Environment Management Plan of Seychelles 2000-2010 to
District Administrators
As
part of the Seychelles Small Islands Voice project activities,
a presentation was made on 31st July 2002 on the Environment Management
Plan of Seychelles 2000-2010 (EMPS 2000-2010) by Mr. Rolph Payet
and Mr. Alain De Comarmond, Small Islands Voice Coordinators,
and the Head of the Environment Management Plan Seychelles Coordinating
Unit, Mrs. Begum Nageon De Lestang. Most of the District Administrators
attended the presentation and showed great enthusiasm for learning
more about the activities under the Plan.
Mr.
Beven Vidot, District Administrator for St. Louis, and a member
of the Small Islands Voice coordinating committee, had requested
the presentation. Small Islands Voice is viewed as an opportunity
for taking the EMPS 2000-2010 to the grassroots level and getting
feedback from the general public on some of the issues and actions
identified in it. For while the Plan was prepared with the active
involvement of all key stakeholders, it is viewed as a 'living
document' with an inherent review mechanism, which allows for
ongoing stakeholder participation and input throughout the lifespan
of the Plan.
District
Administrators were briefed on the different programmes covered
under the EMPS 2000-2010, the latest project updates under each
programme, and future projects and activities at the local level.
There was a suggestion from one representative to have individual
management plans for each district, so as to better address issues
such as developing tourism, e.g. trail walks and other ecotourism
activities, and generating sustainable financing opportunities
in the individual districts.
The
Ministry of Environment urged the District Administrators to develop
a closer working relationship, and not to hesitate in asking for
advice and assistance.
