Participatory
Radio Programmes
The
objective is to develop participatory radio programmes on selected
development issues and to assess their effectiveness in promoting
community debate on environmental, developmental and social issues.
Four
pilot programmes on selected development issues were prepared
and broadcast on Radio Maldives, the national radio station, and
from the Atoll Media Centres. These programmes were designed to
provide background information, and provide a forum for listeners
to air their views and opinions on the particular topic. Information
booklets were developed on each topic (in Dhivehi and English),
and freely made available to listeners a given period in advance
of the programme airing. Advertisements were made at least two
weeks in advance of each programme, informing listeners of the
upcoming programme topic and the availability of background material.
Listeners were invited to look through the background material,
tune into the programme and phone in with views during the broadcast.
The
programme format included three segments: 1) a short report highlighting
the key points of the topic; 2) discussion on the topic amongst
an expert panel; and 3) phone-in discussion between expert panel
and listeners. The following topics were covered:

Many
questions were asked in the four programmes and the person who
answered the most questions was awarded a prize. The winner of
the programme was K. Thulusdhoo, Dhigu Dhuni, Aishath Zuhuraa.
A very positive response was received from the general public
to these programmes.
