Anse Royale Secondary School protects local beach

Students from the Anse Royale Secondary school recently erected beach barriers at one of the local beaches. The students were assisted by staff from the Coastal Zone Management Unit and the Forestry Section from the Ministry of Environment. Ms. Mariette Esparon a teacher from the school requested the Ministry to install beach barriers at the small pocket beach, located just opposite the school compound, the students at the school themselves had complained that motor vehicles were parking too close to the beach.

The Ministry of Environment already has a programme of installing the barriers at beaches, such barriers are put in place to control the parking distance of vehicles at beaches and to protect the young coastal vegetation planted on beaches. Vehicles parking too close or on to the beach system damage the beach itself and its vegetation eventually leading to beach erosion.

The Ministry will be intensifying its efforts in putting in place even more of these barriers to protect the fragile beach systems.
