Sandwatch Project in Seychelles

Following the participation of Ms Jeanette Larue, Environmental Education Coordinator, Ministry of Education and Youth, at the Sandwatch Project Workshop in Dominica, 7-9th July 2003, Seychelles has started its own Sandwatch Project.

Sandwatch training workshops

Early in 2004, several sets of beach monitoring equipment were provided by Small Islands Voice. The first training workshop for students from Anse Royale and Anse Boileau Secondary Schools in Mahe took place on 5th May 2004. Mr. Rolph Payet presented the equipment to the schools involved, and in his opening remarks said that 'Sand……. is one of the most important resources for small islands around the world'. Presentations on the project and methods were given by Ms. Jeanette Larue, Mr. Rodney Quatre and Mr. Alain De Comarmond. In the afternoon there was a practical field session on the beach. The workshop and the launch of the Sandwatch programme was reported in the local press. Future training workshops will be held in Praslin for Grand Anse Praslin Secondary School and in La Digue for La Digue Secondary School.
