Sensitisation
of young fishers in sustainable fishing practices and conservation
The
non-governmental organization Zanzibar Youth Education, Environment
and Development Support Association (ZAYEDESA) and the Chumbe
Island Coral Park are undertaking a project in 2005 with the aims
to educate young fishers in Zanzibar to:
- Understand
best practice fishing techniques for sustainable business
- Protect
the marine environment while benefiting from its resources
- Understand
the legal issues of fishing practice.
- Understand
the issues around HIV in relation to fishing culture.
The target group consists of 60 young fishers aged 25 years and
below who are registered in an active fishing group. The seminar
will be conducted in two sessions, with groups of 30 fishers each,
by lecturers from Department of Fisheries; Institute of Marine
Sciences, Zanzibar AIDS Commission and Chumbe Island Coral Park.
Three months after the seminar an evaluation will be conducted
to determine the usefulness of the training and future action
The first session was conducted from 4-6th April 2005 and was
attended by 24 young fishers. The three-day programme
included presentations on conservation, marketing and legislation.
A field trip
to Chumbe Island was an important part of the activity.
In
her opening address, the First Lady, Honourable Shadya Karume,
said 'It is my belief that this training will enlighten you all
in the cycle of harvesting, processing and conservation of marine
resources. This will then raise environmental awareness and the
quality of the lives of fisherfolk'

Minister's office. Many members of the media were also present.
Twenty-four young fishers attended the first day of the seminar
on 4th April 2005.
