The Fiji islands
are located in the southwest Pacific, approximately 3,00km northeast
of Australia. The archipelago comprises more than 300 islands,
of which only one third are inhabited. The two largest islands
are Viti Levu and Vanaua Levu (see map below). The land area is
18,333 km2 while the territorial area (land and sea) is 1.3 million
km2. The capital city is Suva on the island of Viti Levu. The
population o Fiji is 824,300 (2002 estimate) and the people are
mainly descendants of Melanesians, Polynesians and Indians, with
some Europeans. English is the official language, and Fijian and
Hindi are also widely spoken. The local currency is the Fiji dollar.
