on 'Capacity development for sustainable development in SIDS:
building partnerships for environmental protection, education,
public awareness and training'
was held at the University of the South Pacific from 3-9th December
2003. It was sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme
and organised by the United Nations Department for Economic and
Social Affairs. The meeting had three main components: (1) capacity
development for environmental protection - highlighting special
initiatives at the community level; (2) cooperation between SIDS
tertiary institutions; and (3) capacity development for sustainable
development curricula in schools and programmes for public awareness.
The output of the meeting will provide an important contribution
to the inter-regional meeting of SIDS to be held in the Bahamas,
26-30th January 2004.
