Biodegradable Plastic Bags Available

Australia's first biodegradable plastic bags are now available from CITC Food Centre.

The BioBag meets the Australian Environmental standard and is converted to water and CO2 when it breaks down.

If exposed directly to sunlight, the BioBag will degrade within two to three months and when buried underground in under three years. Also no toxic fumes will be released if it is burnt. 'Normal' plastic bags take between 10 to 20 years to disintegrate.

Managers of CITC Food Centre, Steve Matthews and Makini Ngaru will officially launch the BioBag at the Jingle Bell Charity Fun Run this afternoon.

'We approached REAP's Bruce Gray about it and with such limited landfill space on Rarotonga, we thought anything we can do to help'. Gray praised CITC for their initiative in bringing in the BioBag.

'Reusing the BioBag at home will also help reduce landfill space', says Gray.

These bags have the same strength as the conventional plastic bags, at no real extra cost.
