Release: New Atlases for Schools
Rarotonga's
school principals were today presented with copies of the new
"Jacaranda Atlas of the Pacific Islands" book courtesy of the
Office of the New Zealand High Commission, New Zealand AID (NZAID)
and REAP. Copies of the atlas will also be presented to the
Cook Islands Library and Museum and the Cook Islands National
Library.
"The
Atlas of the Pacific Islands is without a doubt the best atlas
for students, teachers and anyone with a special interest in
and of the Pacific. Including the "world" sections is an added
plus as it puts all the information one needs in one easy access
place in one book. The layout and attention to detail are most
impressive and extremely helpful. This is especially useful
to students and people in general, who are looking for the location
of small island states and other locations be they small islands
or cities not usually found in maps or any atlas. It gives one
not only a reference point but more importantly, a sense of
knowing that just because one may live on a small island does
not mean one is isolated from the rest of the world. The Atlas
of the Pacific Islands will be of vital importance not only
as a geographic reference but as a sense of general knowledge
and importance as the reality of globalization brings us all
closer together," stated REAP's Bruce Gray.
REAP
is most thankful to NZAID and the Office of the New Zealand
High Commission whose financial support has made this atlas
available to every school in the Cook Islands. We also want
to thank Air Rarotonga for delivering the atlas to the outer
islands. We know this will be a valuable resource tool for students
both here on Rarotonga and on the outer islands.
For
the first time the Pacific is prominently featured in a world
atlas with information pages on each Pacific Island country
including the Cook Islands.
Sue
Ngatokorua, principal of Mangaia School calls the "atlas an
excellent addition to the school's resources as it is great
to have an atlas with the Pacific in the middle of the world
map. The section on each island group provides enough in-depth
information to stimulate discussion and research amongst the
students."
Marky
Tangimataiti, Principal Tamarua Primary in Mangaia "The atlas
is excellent in it helps to keep up-to-date with the rapid changes
that have occurred in the Pacific region in the world today.
The information showing settlement and land forms supports students
and staff in their case studies."
