Improving
communication amongst the islands
One
of the objectives of Small Islands Voice in the Cook Islands in
2003, is to improve communication linkages among schools and communities
in Rarotonga and the outer islands. As was found in a technology
audit many of these outer island schools do not have simple
equipment such as facsimile machines. Communication
equipment was supplied to schools in the outer islands by
the project; this equipment combines telephone, facsimile and
copying functions. This allows the schools to communicate in an
'instant mode' with other islands and the outside world, and saves
them considerable time. Outer island schools
have expressed their gratitude for the equipment.
Computer
and camera equipment for schools in Rarotonga and the outer
islands was also purchased, so that students can take part in
the second phase
of the Small Islands Voice internet-based youth forum, as
well as benefiting from the educational tools that computers provide.
So far five schools are participating in the youth forum: Araura
College, in Aitutaki; Avarua Primary School,
Nikao Maori Primary School and Nukutere
College in Rarotonga; and Mangaia
School, Mangaia
