Mangaia Community Television Pilot Project 2003 Mangaia, Cook Islands

In a new Small Islands Voice initiative the island of Mangaia (population 700) in the Cook Islands has begun broadcast of a locally produced community television programmes.

The Mangaia community TV initiative started in early March 2003. The 15-20 minute news programmes are produced by Mangaia School students and are broadcast on a fortnightly basis. On alternate fortnights Mangaia's Tanga'eo Environmental Rangers produce and broadcast an environmental programme featuring local issues and development.

The community news and environment programmes are sponsored by Small Islands Voice, REAP, Anchor Milk and Mobil Oil.

PRODUCTIONS BY MANGAIA SCHOOL

First Production:

  • Our first TV production was the filming of a farewell function that the students put on for one the teachers who was retiring. Mr. Raumea Koroa had been teaching for more than 41 years and we thought it would be a final tribute to him to put on a concert and have it filmed so that all the people on the island could see the items and hear songs some of which were written especially for Mr. Koroa. Raumea Koroa is known as the poet laureate of Mangaia for his moving poetry written in both English and Cook Island Maori including the unique Mangaian dialect.

Second Production:

  • Our second TV programme was in the form of news. We decided to collect the news for the week and present it on TV on a Friday evening. We had two news readers, a boy and a girl. They read the same news items but one read it in English and the other in Maori. We also had some video footage of events around the school so people in the community could see what the students are doing at school these days. It went well and we will continue to put together Mangaia School News once a fortnight. Since our school is made up of Primary and Secondary students we will share the news between the two sections of the school. The first news was presented by secondary students and the next news will be presented by the primary students. We will also make sure that we have different news readers each time so that more students get the opportunity to read the news. Eventually the students will organize the whole thing, with teacher support. For the first few programmes the teachers are organizing the production.

PRODUCTIONS BY MANGAIA TANGA'EO ENVIRONMENTAL RANGERS

During the month of March the environment programmes featured local bio-diversity and the importance of not littering and what a clean island means to health and tourism.

Stay tuned for more!

  • In the works for the students is a special feature on "The Benefits of Healthy Eating." This will feature the schools Home Economics students preparing local food.

  • Coming up on the environment programme are special features for Earth Day, the coral reef eco-system and recycling.
