Nukutere
College has become the first school to see their article posted
on the UNESCO Small Islands Voice website. Schools from across
the Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Ocean regions of the world
have been asked to write articles on a wide variety of subjects
as part of the UNESCO Small Islands Voice Project. Two Nukutere
fourth form classes chose the subject agriculture, "Tu anga
tanutanu" as their topic. Student editor was Mercedes Makiuti
assisted by Kara Macfarlane, Desmond Wildin and McBirney Ama.
REAP's
Bruce Gray and project coordinator has high praise for the students
work. "It is well written and well thought out. The students
recommendation that government should assist with the installation
of hydroponic gardens in schools as a means to encourage more
young people to become interested in agriculture is worthy of
serious consideration," says Gray. He adds that now the student's
thoughts will be available to students across the ocean and
throughout the world.
College
principal Brother Frank Perkins says the project has given students
the opportunity to use modern technology to communicate worldwide
with students of similar age, in similar countries and talk
about problems, concerns and issues faced by our youth today.
Gray
thanks Brother Frank for having the foresight to see the important
educational value of the project to his students.
Other
Cook Islands schools participating in the Small Islands Voice
Youth Internet Forum are Avarua Primary School, Araura College
on Aitutaki and Mangaia College on Mangaia.
Gray
also gives thanks to Telecom Cook Islands (TCI) for providing
the free internet service in helping schools in the country
take part in the forum.
Interested
parents and members of the community as well as students not
directly involved in the forum can view the website to read
the students article and comments. Each week will see a new
article posted from a school within the countries participating.
The forum can be reached on www.sivyouth.org.
