Digital Video Camera for Mitiaro Community TV Station

Residents of Mitiaro can now see community events and news updates about what's happening on their island without having to leave their living room. Events are now being taped for evening broadcast on the Mitiaro Community TV thus enabling those who are unable to be in attendance at the time of the event to see the event at a later time and well as catch up on community news.

This is thanks to a new digital video camera recently being donated to Mitiaro Community Television by Stuart Davies.

Modern telecommunication is a vital tool spread of knowledge Davis stated. REAP had asked as part of the Small Islands Voice initiative if I could donate a video camera to enable young people on Mitiaro to be able to film and broadcast community events. Davies said he was most happy to make this personal donation following a request from REAP's Bruce Gray.

REAP's Bruce Gray said he was very grateful to Stuart Davies for his generous donation. Now the people of Mitiaro will be able to see what is happening at school, at council meetings and at special events. In a small community like Mitiaro people are often so involved in assisting with the event, for example the Manea Games, that they are unable to see the event for themselves. Now with the aid of the new video camera they can not only see themselves, their friends, relatives and the entire event while relaxing at home.

The digital video camera will also help young people learn a new work skill and to improve their communication skills- such as public speaking and writing in both English and Maori, all important links in the Small Islands Voice Programme. And just as importantly it will help to preserve Mitiaro's living history for future generations.

Mitiaro now joins Aitutaki, Mangaia and Manihiki in Small Islands Voice local community TV broadcasting.

This is a partnership arrangement with sponsorship coming from REAP, UNESCO and Anchor Milk New Zealand.
