Survey of community television in the Outer Cook Islands

In July 2003, a small survey was conducted of the Community Television News programme. The survey was coordinated by the Rarotonga Environmental Awareness Programme (REAP) and conducted by local island coordinators. Fifty households/families were surveyed in Aitutaki, Mangaia, Mitiaro and Manihiki.

The survey questions and a summary of the responses follow:

  1. Do you watch Community TV/News?

  2. Do you want Community TV/News to continue?

Over 80% of the people on each island who watch Community TV/News on a regular basis want it to continue

  3. How would you rate the content?
    Good                             Fair                             Bad

All the respondents rated their island's Community TV/News as 'Good'

  4. Should Community TV/News be weekly or fortnightly?

    All respondents prefer weekly broadcasts

  5. Should Community/TV News be in:
    All English language
    All Cook Islands Maori
Use both languages depending on story/news

Although there was some support, particularly among the older people, for having the Community TV/News all in Cook Islands Maori, the majority (72%) were in favour of mixed language broadcast.

  6. Is this a good training programme for young people?

All the respondents felt this was good training and provided educational benefit for the young people of the islands
