Survey
of community television in the Outer Cook Islands
In
July 2003, a small survey was conducted of the Community Television
News programme. The survey was coordinated by the Rarotonga Environmental
Awareness Programme (REAP) and conducted by local island coordinators.
Fifty households/families were surveyed in Aitutaki, Mangaia,
Mitiaro and Manihiki.
The
survey questions and a summary of the responses follow:

80% of the people on each island who watch Community TV/News
on a regular basis want it to continue

the respondents rated their island's Community TV/News as 'Good'

respondents prefer weekly broadcasts
- Should
Community/TV News be in:
All English language
All Cook Islands Maori
Use both languages depending on story/news
Although
there was some support, particularly among the older people,
for having the Community TV/News all in Cook Islands Maori,
the majority (72%) were in favour of mixed language broadcast.
- Is
this a good training programme for young people?
All
the respondents felt this was good training and provided educational
benefit for the young people of the islands
