Survey of viewers after broadcast of the video 'Mauke Memories'

A telephone survey was conducted in March 2005 with households on Mauke, Mitiaro and Mangaia approximately one week after the video 'Mauke memories' was broadcast. On Mauke 12 of the 80 households with telephone were surveyed, in Mangaia 10 of the 100 households with telephone were called, in Mitiaro only 1 of 45 households with telephone was reached (the telephone exchange was damaged due to recent hurricanes).

On Mauke, the responses may have been influenced by the fact that most of the people knew the video producer who was conducting the survey. This was not the case on the other islands.

Questions asked were:

1. Did you see the video?
2. Did you like the video?
3. Any comments on the video?

Everyone who saw the video responded that they liked it. However, respondents in Mangaia and Mitiaro thought that their islands should have been chosen instead of Mauke, as they thought that their islands were better.

In Mangaia, people were very shy to talk on the phone, except Anthony Whyte who is the Telecom Manager. During a lengthy interview, he expressed appreciation for the monetary assistance provided for the broadcast and was very keen to participate in the future. Outer islands are still broadcasting the environmental video clips even though contracts have expired.
