Production of a video on Suwarrow Atoll

The Taporoporoanga Ipukarea Society Inc carried out a rat-eradication programme on Suwarrow Atoll during July 2003. During this time, the Society's Vice-President, Richard Wachter, took film footage which showed the unspoilt nature of the atoll and its importance as a bird-breeding site, as well as the history of the island and reminiscences from an islander who endured a hurricane there in 1942. The footage was edited and a video prepared, and with the help of Small Islands Voice, DVD and VHS copies have been produced for general sale to the public, and to be shown at schools and at awareness-raising events.

On Saturday 24th April 2004, there was a public launch of the Suwarrow DVD and VHS tapes at the Punanga Nui market in Rarotonga; this is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

The Taporoporoanga Ipukarea Society Inc would like to see Suwarrow declared a World Heritage Park in conjunction with the Line Islands (a trans-boundary park) and to encourage sustainable development rather than merely commercial development of this atoll. It is hoped that the DVD and VHS will broaden awareness of the importance of this atoll and the need to preserve its biodiversity.

As a part of Small Islands Voice activities camera and ancillary equipment were supplied to the Taporoporoanga Ipukarea Society.
