This
past week, 20 -28 September 2002, saw thousands of Cook Islanders,
adults and school students along with scores of visitors volunteer
to clean our nation's beaches of litter and other debris as
part of Rarotonga Environmental Action Programme's (REAP) Cook
Islands Coastal Clean-up Campaign. In addition, schools, individuals
and businesses and organizations on all islands have joined
with REAP and Mobil Oil in the Adopt-A- Beach campaign. This
will be an ongoing effort to help keep our beaches and foreshore
areas clean and litter free. The issue of land-based pollutants
causing serious damage to the Cook Islands' marine environment
is a serious and growing issue. What we throw or put in the
ground eventually washes down - polluting our beaches, lagoons
and drinking water. It is not only a serious environmental issue
but also a serious health issue as well. By keeping our beaches
and foreshore clean we not only help our country's economy but
we also minimise health risks to ourselves. A Clean Environment
is a Healthy Environment and a Healthy Environment is a Clean
Environment.
