Kids clean up centre

Two young Nikao Maori Primary School students last week collected 10 sacks of rubbish from the Nikao Social Centre. The children joined others throughout the islands in cleaning their beaches of litter as part of REAP's nationwide Adopt-A-Beach Programme.

There are sponsored signs on Rarotonga and on the outer islands reminding us to 'Keep our beaches clean - please don't litter.' However, despite all the awareness there is still plenty of litter at the Nikao Social Centre picnic area as Metua and David found. They are disgusted at the amount of rubbish, especially beer bottles and cans left by the tables, especially when bins are provided. "People should learn to recycle and take care of the beach by throwing their rubbish in the bins and not leaving them next to the tables," they said.

"It is very disgusting and with the Easter holidays coming up there will be a lot of people visiting the beach," says Nicholls. Ngaoire adds that it is worse because school students are the ones picking up the rubbish.
