Several
opinion surveys were conducted in Palau in 2002. The Office of
Environmental Response and Coordination carried out a survey of
natural resources as part of its commitments under the National
Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan. The Palau Conservation Society
was contracted to conduct this survey between July and November
2002. This survey covered resource use and sustainability in the
past and present. An exploratory survey relating to the International
Waters programme was conducted at the same time.
The
Small Islands Voice opinion survey was conducted between January
and April 2003. A questionnaire
with ten simple questions was used . The 2000 census data was
used as a starting point in the survey design. The highlights
from the survey and the full survey
report are available. The major issues of concern to the general
public in Palau were economy and infrastructure, crime and drug
use, the high number of foreign workers, and the erosion of traditional
values and leadership.
