The
Small Islands Voice Global internet
forum was launched in October 2002 with an article about the
compact
road construction in Babeldaob and how this was changing lifestyles
for the residents of Palau. The article presented the advantages
and disadvantages, and generated 45 responses from islanders all
over the globe. The overall consensus
of the responses was that the road construction is inevitable
and necessary but that such development projects must fully provide
for environmental concerns.

Since
that theme discussion, residents from Palau have played an active
role in the forum responding on a variety of issues ranging from
crime
and violence to solid
waste management.
Local
newspapers such as Tia Belau have requested permission to publish
some of the discussions and this provides a good way of widening
the debate to those people without internet access.
