YOUNG ISLANDERS

Internet-based Youth Forum

Phase 1 (Trial) activities Sept-Dec 2002

A trial internet-based youth forum started in mid-September and ran until December 2002. To view this first phase of the forum, visit http://www.sivyouth.org (with user name view and password only), and click on the button [ SIV Youth Phase 1 ] on the top right-hand side of the screen.

The following schools were involved in the forum:

  • Anse Royale Secondary School, Mahé, Seychelles
  • Bequia Community High School, Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines · Gingerland Secondary School, Nevis, St. Kitts and Nevis
  • Mindzenty High School, Koror, Palau
  • Nukutere College, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
  • Verchilds High School, St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis

The goals of this trial internet-based forum were:

  • To find out the views of youth (in this case 13-15 year olds) on living in small islands
  • To promote direct interaction between youth in different islands and different regions
  • To test the potential of an un-moderated Internet-based forum among schools

Several themes were selected to form the basis of this trial forum:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of living in my island
  • Life after school in my island
  • Drug and alcohol use among youth in my island
  • Sports and recreation in my island
  • The future for my island

Each school prepared a short article (500-700 words) on their assigned theme. These articles were posted on the forum at two-week intervals, after which there was an interactive exchange among the six participating schools relating to the subject matter of the article. In the case of Palau, because of the very limited internet access available at the school, a special arrangement was made with a local internet café such that the students could access the internet there on a twice-weekly basis.

The forum was successful and an assessment was conducted by the students and teachers involved. Based on their input and discussions at the Small Islands Voice Inter-regional Workshop held in Palau in November 2002, plans are underway for a second phase of the youth forum to run from January to June 2003.

Read the articles prepared by students from Seychelles and the Cook Islands to find out what the students thought of the youth forum, and a poem, 'Us Islanders' written by Marvelle Estrale a teacher from the Seychelles.
