The seven major program areas
are: (a) integrated management and sustainable
development of coastal areas, including Exclusive
Economic Zone, (b) marine environmental protection; (c)
sustainable use and conservation of living marine
resources of the high seas; (d) sustainable use and
conservation of living marine resources under national
jurisdiction; (e) the addressing of critical
uncertainties in management of the marine environment and
climate change; (f) the strengthening of international,
including regional, co-operation and co-ordination; and
(g) sustainable development in small islands. (Back)
UNESCO is among several UN
agencies that join efforts with Member States in
implementing the coastal and small island components of
Agenda 21 and the Barbados Plan of Action. (Back)
