International Scientific Committee

After the disintegration of the USSR five new republics have been formed within the Central Asian subregion: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Since the composition of the International Scientific Committee no longer corresponded to the situation in the region, the Director-General proposed that the States of the Committee be amended and the Executive Board of UNESCO adopted the following amendment (141 EX/35):
"The Committee shall consist of 16 members appointed as follows: twelve (12) members who are nationals of Member States of UNESCO belonging to the Central Asian region – one from each Member State; and four (4) members from other regions". In 1993 new members of the Committee were appointed by the Director-General.
