Exhibition "Inventing Reality: Contemporary Art from Estonia"

INVENTING REALITY offers a snapshot of contemporary art scene in Estonia, featuring works from collections of the Kumu Art Museum as well as brand new productions. Rather than being a mere inventory of “Estonian art,” this exhibition aims at analysing the contemporary art scene in relation to its evolution during the last decade.
Though this is perhaps an overly simplistic reduction, artists presented here could be fitted into two basic categories. First, artists who enliven art’s relationship to tradition and explore the role of artist as narrator of stories (Kaido Ole, Tõnis Saadoja, Maarit Murka, Merike Estna, Villu Jaanisoo, Marko Mäetamm, Kiwa). While these artists stay within the safety of art context, they are also busy looking for new ways of being closer to the everyday reality. Works by the second category of artists representing Estonian photo art in this exhibition display different strategies of staging and playing (Peeter Laurits,
Jaanus Samma, Taavi Piibemann,
Jaan Toomik, Kristina Norman).
