Implementation of the Communication Programme to raise awareness of water and sanitation and nutrition in the native languages of the Miskit and Mayangna indigenous people

Résumé

With the Regional Governments of the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) and the South Atlantic
Autonomous Region (RAAS), the UNICEF Country Office in Nicaragua is implementing a communication
programme to prevent acute diarrhoeal diseases and acute respiratory illnesses, and to raise awareness of
water and sanitation, and nutrition in the native languages of the Miskit and Mayangna indigenous peoples and in Creole and Spanish.
The Office is also supporting psychosocial care for children from communities affected by Hurricane Ida in the North and South Atlantic Autonomous Regions, in conjunction with the RAAN and RAAS Regional Governments.
Training has been provided to teachers of teacher training schools, while curricular documents have been
reviewed and validated in five languages, with support from the RAAN and RAAS Regional Governments. This
should help reduce gaps in primary school access, retention and completion due to ethnic identity, gender,
disability and child labour. Amongst other programming with the most marginalized and vulnerable groups
in mind, UNICEF is strengthening the Network of Adolescent Communicators of the Caribbean Coast;
indigenous and Afro-descendent people trained on HIV prevention, through the URACCAN; and the indigenous community of Mozonte, through the "Los Cumiches" Communication and Social Mobilization Association.
The office is also promoting alliances with the Caribbean Coast's ecumenical networks around HIV/AIDS, in
conjunction with the Inter-Ecclesial Centre for Theological and Social Studies (ClEETS).
