Project "Communication, Voluntarism and equal opportunity"

Résumé

The main aim of the project is to show how media and communication can have an active role to raise awareness about anti-discrimination and create a good basis to grant equal opportunity for all. Since inclusion is a fundamental value of the European Union and at the same time is one of the main objectives of our organisation and our members (historically voluntarism was born to create inclusion and avoid any kind of discrimination) and media one of the powerful influencing instruments, above all among young people, it seems crucial to us to investigate which action can be undertaken in order to allow the most disadvantaged groups of society to become involved in initiatives that directly or indirectly affect them.
General objectives of the project are:
• Analyse some discrimination causes affecting society: gender, economical, regional, or social reasons;
• Analyse communication tools and show how they could become instruments to fight prejudice and ensure equal access to all;
• Research current communication ‘habits’ among CCIVS membership, with best practices, and underline potential risks in the field, e.g. promotion of camps, of EVS, how is it done;
• Develop a web page with results, main considerations and recommendations accessible to all and which can be used by the member organisations and stakeholders to avoid discriminations and enhance equal opportunity diffusion in their activities;
• Organize a workshop and a concise document to present to our members and stakeholders.

The project promotes the participation of young people. It does not only involve EVS volunteers in its own development, but also aims at permitting a deeper involvement of young people in voluntary activities in a larger scale, without any distinction of race, gender, social condition, etc. Communication tools will be used as instruments against discrimination. In this regard, the project aims at providing instruments to raise people’s awareness of good practices to avoid discrimination, in order to ensure the inclusion of young people who have fewer opportunities, due to socio-economic factors, physical or mental disabilities, health problems, cultural differences, or educational or geographical situations/obstacles.

In the first part of the project the EVS volunteer will focus on the principal causes of discrimination, paying a particular attention to those born in the organisation of workcamps, training and other voluntary activities, as well as the good practices to avoid them. Secondly the task of the volunteer will be to use practically some communication tools and show how they can become instruments to fight prejudice and ensure equal access to non-formal/formal education and employment. In this regard a special page will be set up by the volunteer himself on our website and since the work of the volunteer will be elaborated with and is destined at stakeholders (trainers, project managers and to a lesser degree the local hosts themselves), a special workshop will be put up during the 31st CCIVS General Assembly which will be held in November 2010.
