Project " Gender sensitivity at voluntary work"

Résumé

At the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the 1st International Women Day in 1910 (the celebrations took place for the first time in 1911), and taking into account the priority given by the UN and the European Commission to Gender Equality as a prerequisite to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and build better societies, CCIVS launched a new centralized EVS project addressing gender issues in International Voluntary Service (IVS) and youth programmes: “Gender sensitivity at (voluntary) work”.
As a first outcome of the ongoing Africa-Europe project “Culture meets Concepts”, the project aims at exploring gender roles in different societies and linking the general reflections on gender sensitivity to the participation of young women and men in IVS projects and in the management of IVS organizations.
Hosting projects – which can address gender issues in a variety of fields, according to the hosting organisations’ interests and priorities – should guarantee the possibility for the volunteers to:
1) Months 1-3: Explore the traditional and contemporary roles of women and men in the hosting societies, in particular through appropriate research, identifying specific themes and fields of action in order to better promote gender sensitivity in both the hosting and sending countries, and in particular in youth and international voluntary service projects.
2) Months 4-6: Provide suitable spaces and support to create and run targeted and culturally appropriated activities aiming at the realization of gender sensitivity and equality both in the sending and hosting countries, and in particular in international voluntary service projects and organizations.

CCIVS will ensure the creation of a preparatory team composed of experts in gender issues and international voluntary service, taking in charge the organization of pre-departure and on-arrival trainings as well as mid-term and final evaluation meetings, with the support of UNESCO experts and existing publications on the topic.
