Activities organized by ICOM National Committees, International Committees and Regional Alliances in 2010

The most recent example of inter-National-Committee collaboration is the discussion forum from 14 to 18 June 2010: ICOM Netherlands invited ICOM South Africa and ICOM China to a discussion forum dedicated to the launch of their new book entitled Sense and Sensitivity. The Dutch and Delicate Heritage Issues, whose participation added national flavours to the discussion on tainted heritage. The outcome of the meeting was discussed during ICOM General Conference in November 2010 where the three committees sent one representative expressing their visions.
ICOM Argentina, ICOFOM and the University of Oporto organised from 27 to 30 September 2010 in Buenos Aires a seminar on ‘The museum thought contemporary Hispanic-speaking countries and Portuguese’. The focus of this event was to mobilise museum representatives from different geographical regions of the world which allows the presence of prominent speakers, able to restore the various lines of thought on the social function of the museum and its true scope in developing countries.
In May 2010, within the overall theme Museums for Social Harmony, ICOM Slovenia organised the international module at the Celje Summer School of Museology in Piran, inviting to Slovenia, in cooperation with the British Council, Xerxes Mazda, Head of Learning and Audiences at the British Museum, London. He lectured and held workshops on the topic of why people visit museums.
ICOM SEE (International Council of Museums South East Europe Alliance), together with the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Venice Office organised a conference on ‘National History Museums in South-East Europe: Learning History, building shared memories’ on 18 and 19 October 2010: an example of promoting regional dialogues and understanding.
