International exhibition of mosaics “Signs of Identity”

Résumé

International exhibition of mosaics “Signs of Identity” is a result of international project which was
dedicated for promotion of inter-culture dialogue and was implemented by the Art Academy of Latvia and
the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO. It is continuation of collaboration between UNESCO,
South Caucasus and Baltic countries.
The creative workshop of the project “Signs of Identity / Signs of Diversity” took place in Riga, Latvia from
November 23 to 27, 2009 gathering young artists and their professors from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia,
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and France. During the workshops artists created mosaics based on themes
of cultural diversity and cultural identity.
Project organizers wanted to know what are the signs of identity, what are the differences, what the
cultural diversity means to the artists. XXI century is characterized by the facts that borders between
different cultures are disappearing and universal cultural space is appearing instead. Process of
globalization is becoming a thread to individual and unique cultural expressions. Participants of the project
were invited to discuss about cultural similarities and differences, to search for unique features of each
country and to find the common similarities of all the participating countries.
