Independence Day in Palau

Palau celebrates its Independence Day by holding a national fair showcasing Palau’s traditional activities from story telling, arts, entertainment, culinary art, and other expressions of cultures. It is also a day in which Palau’s recognizes cultural diversity by allowing all other cultures and community groups to participate and perform and showcase their culture as part of the whole community of the island. There are 32 different communities in Palau which only has a population of 20,000 people. This brings new challenges in education, health services and other services provided by the government. So this day is extremely important for the sharing of knowledge and acceptance of other cultures. The country has included also the United Nations Day (Oct 24) and the World Food Day (Oct 16 ) so they are also celebrated on this day. The Official name of the event is Independence Day/Olechotel Belau Fair (Showcasing Palau Fair).
