Film "Kinshasa Symphony"

Résumé

Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the third-largest city in Africa. Almost ten million people live here and they number among the poorest inhabitants on this planet. Kinshasa is the home of Central Africa’s one and only symphony orchestra – L’Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste. It is a film about the Congo, about the people of Kinshasa and about music.
"Kinshasa Symphony" follows the musicians through the streets of their city and shows, despite of all the daily difficulties their life in Kinshasa may bare, in what extent music inspires people and makes them do extraordinary things. The film was shown at the 60th Berlinale Film Festival in May 2010.
Most of the musicians are self-taught, they built their instruments themselves and often have to walk miles to participate in the daily rehearsals. And they do all that next to working a full-time job, having to look after their children and finding a place to live. Still they make music with all their passion. They know that they cannot achieve everything they have aimed to do but they are determined to help themselves. These people of Kinshasa perform Mozart and Verdi in public places in front of thousands of people. Musicians who interpret Carmina Burana as if not less than their own life was at stake. Every note expressing an exclamation mark of the will to survive. Nothing could be more different from the reality of subsidised classical music in the West.
