Partnerships with category 2 centres under the auspices of UNESCO
Institutes and centres under the auspices of UNESCO (category 2) are funded and made available by Member States to support the programs and strategic objectives of UNESCO. There are to date six centres devoted exclusively to intangible cultural heritage in the world, and a seventh, whose mandate also includes the World Heritage:
- Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe, Sofia, Bulgaria
The objectives of the Centre are to promote the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and to contribute to its implementation in South-Eastern Europe; to increase the participation of communities, groups and individuals in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in the countries of the region; to enhance the capacity of the South-Eastern European Member States of UNESCO in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

- International Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region, Japan
The objectives of the Centre are to promote the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and contribute to its implementation in the Asia-Pacific region; to increase the participation of communities, groups and individuals in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific region; to enhance the capacity of the Asia-Pacific Member States of UNESCO in safeguarding ICH, particularly, to foster regional and international cooperation for safeguarding ICH by strengthening the capacities of concerned personnel.

- Regional Research Centre for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in West and Central Asia, Teheran, Iran
The objectives of the Centre are: to promote the 2003 Convention and its implementation in West and Central Asia; to strengthen capacities and cooperation in the region for identifying, inventorying and documenting intangible cultural heritage in order to contribute to its safeguarding; to further and coordinate scientific and technical studies aimed at developing, managing and evaluating safeguarding measures for intangible cultural heritage present in the region; to reinforce capacities in the region for actively implementing the 2003 Convention on the regional and international level, in particular concerning ICH present on the territories of more than one State.

- Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Latin America (CRESPIAL), Cuzco, Peru
The objectives of the Centre are to coordinate, exchange and disseminate activities to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage of the participating States; to promote the implementation and follow-up of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and other international legal instruments in force in this field; to promote and strengthen cooperation between the countries of the region and support national capacity in this field; to alert participating States in order that communities may participate in activities to safeguard their intangible cultural heritage.
