Several international Prizes were established to contribute to the safeguarding of proclaimed Masterpieces. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved, at its 161st session, in April 2001, the General Rules governing the award of “Prizes for safeguarding, protecting and promoting cultural spaces or forms of traditional cultural expression proclaimed by UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” (inglés|francés|español|ruso|chino|árabe).
The Jury of the prizes, composed of 5 members appointed by the Director General, was chaired by the President of Proclamation Jury. The Prizes were mostly awarded immediately following the Proclamation Ceremony; special ceremonies were organized for the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan Prize.
