Scotland has enthusiastically embraced the concept of heritage, and has invested significantly in the restoration of historic and listed buildings. An emphasis on safeguarding historic structures reflects the traditional British perspective, which largely regarded heritage in terms the built environment. This emphasis is at odds with the Gaelic term dúchas, which implies a collective heritage: one that connects living people to particular places. Recent developments in Scotland indicate that perspectives on heritage have begun to embrace living – as well as material – dimensions of heritage. With particular reference to UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), this inaugural lecture explores the current challenges faced by tradition-bearers and custodians of living heritage in Scotland, Europe and further afield.
