"The Calabrian Lira Foundation" in collaboration with the Local Branch of the ICHNetwork, based in Calabria, organize a Workshop on Calabrian lira. The program includes a presentation of the 2003 Convention. The calabrian lira is an age-old stringed musical bow whose origin lies between high and late Middle Ages. It's a real ancestor of the violin. Has no keyboard, no capotasto and is carved from a single block of carved wood. The keys are placed in sagittal way and "soul" is mobile, stuck under the bridge. This instrument has come down to us through oral cultures of the Mediterranean keeping substantially unchanged to Byzantine centuries. The visceral, primitive sound of the instrument and its unmistakable "attack" makes it a fascinating and evocative. In the years ' 80 of XX century was considered practically disappeared in Calabria. A fundamental research and then stages and didactic activities brought to the attention of musicians and manufacturers in recent years.
