Discipline: contemporary and traditional danse. The host and partner institution: the Compagnie Gàara is the first contemporary dance company in Kenya. Since its creation, the Company has drawn attention: it has won the third price of the African choregraphic meeting in 1998 and has been selected in 1999 by the MASA (Marché des arts du spectacle africain). Since three years, the Company collaborates with Ballet Atlantique, Centre chorégraphique français and other inter-national institutions, by creating a long term project for training, artistic exchange and choreographic development in Kenya. Nature of the bursary: round trip travel, full board. Artist must provide their health insurance. Dates of the residency: to be fixed by mutual agreement between August 2002 and June 2003. Eligibility: choreographer /dancer with a focus on african origins, with a solid experience in traditional and contemporary dance, having shown a capacity of creation by taking into account the ritual and choreographic inheritance and the contemporary and urban reality, wishing to participate to the development of the first contemporary choreographic movement in Kenya, capable of staging a work with local artists at the end of the residency. Working knowledge of English, Swahili or French required.
