In addition to supporting national and regional strategies for the
development of the film and audiovisual industries UNESCO is concerned
with the content of television programmes, especially when devoted
to culture.
u For
this reason, at the proposal of the European Commission and in collaboration
with it, a study was undertaken on "Cultural programmes on
European public television channels".
uu
Entrusted to an expert, this work was carried out with the help
of specialists and the directors of the major television channels
of member countries of the European Union. It was closely scrutinized
by a further panel of experts before being finalized.
uu
It is a comparative study and includes a set of recommendations
whose implementation, in partnership with the television channels
themselves, should give rise to further work.
uu
Issued in French and English and already widely circulated, it should
also help to inspire similar research for the benefit of other regions.
u
In addition, contacts have been made with various cultural television
channels throughout the world with a view to setting up new networks
for programme exchanges and coproductions.
u
The present-day multiplication of channels could clearly be used
to further this awareness of others, everywhere in the world.
u
There is obviously subject matter here for new transdisciplinary
and intersectoral activities.
