Summary
This volume covers the long eighteenth
century that begins before 1700 and finishes on the eve of the movements
for independence. During the second half of the
century, complex reformist processes took place in Latin America as a
consequence of determined regal projects. Paradoxically these Pombalian
or Bourbon reforms, designed in the metropolis for the renovation and
strengthening of colonial bonds, led to their break-up with the
movements for independence. The historical actors described in this
volume are not limited to the Creoles who led such movements: on the
contrary, the advances made by historians in recent years in bringing
out the roles and visions of other social actors of the period are
afforded ample space in the volume, thereby illuminating many features
of the construction of contemporary Latin America.
The chapters in this volume are arranged in five parts. The first one
features the new period of European expansion in the course of the
eighteenth century, and the role of Portugal and Spain in this regard.
The next part deals with the demography and economics of the region at
the time. Part Three investigates the relationship between the imperial
State and Latin American societies. Part Four centres on changes and
reactions in those societies in the face of attempts at imperialistic
reform. The final part gives an extensive treatment of politics, culture
and problems of identity. An attempt is made in these pages to assemble
the changes that occurred during the period under the general labels of
"Enlightenment" and "Modernity" confronting them
with new interpretations from the fields of histographgy.
