With this type of apparatus the millers could open the dam doors where the water accumulated in the return channel, which would then descend through small channels towards the box where the hydraulic wheels were located.
This apparatus had a 90cm zipper, lamp and various toothed wheels, all that were activated via a steel instrument - 'manivela'.
