At a time of exponential growth of electronic and television networks, books are an ideal way to express cultural identity. Their distribution is a key factor in the promotion of cultural diversity. As so many windows to the outside world, they can contribute potently to material well-being. Every effort should therefore be made to develop the book industry, and copyright which is its legal basis.

Durmitor World Heritage site is no longer threatened (Serbia and Montenegro)
25 04 2005 The government of Montenegro, Serbia and Montenegro, has cancelled a project to build a dam that would flood part of the Tara River Canyon in the buffering UNESCO Biosphere Reserve next to Durmitor National Park, a World Heritage site inscribed in 1980.

09 - 13 05 2005  Organized as part of the intersectoral programme "The Sahara of Cultures and People", the aim of the meetings is to draw the public's attention to the socio-cultural aspects of life in the Sahara. The approaches include the interactive participation of cultures, with a view of difference populations' way of life and the importance of combating poverty. 
UNESCO to take part in the 2005 Cannes Film Festival Cannes (France)
11 - 22 05 2005  In pursuance of the common goal to promote the cinema and film-makers from the South, UNESCO - by way of the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC) and the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity- and Radio France Internationale (RFI) have decided to form a partnership. 
World Heritage and Contemporary Architecture - Managing the Historic Urban Landscape Vienna (Austria)
12 - 14 05 2005  About 200 historic cities and urban centres illustrating the diversity of cultural achievements are inscribed on the World Heritage List. This number rises to more than 300 sites inscribed, if the monuments located in an urban context and towns included in cultural landscapes are also considered.

17 05 2005 - 19 05 2005  UNESCO is organizing a three-day expert meeting on "Cultural Diversity in Knowledge Societies" in St. Petersburg. The event takes place in the framework of the conference "UNESCO between the two phases of the World Summit on the Information Society" organized by the Russian authorities. 
Cultural Corridors in South-East Europe Varna (Bulgaria)
20 - 21 05 2005  The regional Forum entitled “Cultural Corridors in South-East Europe: Common Past and Shared Heritage - A Key to Future Partnership” will be held on 20 and 21 May in Varna (Bulgaria) in particular to encourage Heads of State of South-East Europe to promote this sub-region as a potential ground for meeting, recognition and peace with culture very much to the fore.
