BRIEF HISTORY
Nigeria became independent on the 1st of October 1960. Six weeks later, on the
14th of November 1960 Nigeria became the 58th Member State of UNESCO.
Since then, there has always been a Nigerian presence at UNESCO. The present Ambassador
and Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO is Professor Michael Omolewa.
The official contact Ministry for UNESCO is the Federal Ministry of Education.
The Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO was officially inaugurated in 1963
and has its secretariat in the Federal Ministry of Education. Its membership
is made up of Nigerians with the relevant expertise in the fields of UNESCO's
competence. The National Commission is the advisory body to the Government of Nigeria
on all issues concerning UNESCO. The Honourable Minister of Education is the President of
the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO and is responsible for Nigeria's relations
with the Organisation. The present Nigerian Minister of Education is Dr. Igwe
Aja-Nwachuku. The Permanent Delegation is an emanation from the Ministry of Education.
