Mrs. Mariam Yalwaji Katagum was appointed Secretary General in
November 2001 after a distinguished service at the Commission.
Before her recent appointment she had served as Secretary of
the Social and Human Sciences Sector of the NATCOM. She
had also served, between 1999 and 2000, as Secretary of the
Committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Education on
Nigeria-UNESCO Cooperation. She later served as the
Secretary of the Project Steering Committee of the
World Bank Assisted Secondary Education Project
between 2000 and 2001.
Mrs. Katagum attended Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria, where she obtained a B.A. Hons English in
1976. Later, at the University of Lagos, she got
an M.Ed. in Administration and Planning. She also
attended a course at the University College,
London in 1999, where she obtained a
Certificate in Social Development
Policy, Planning and Practice.
Mrs. Katagum was appointed Director, Special
Project at the Universal Basic Education [UBE]
Programme in 2000. She had earlier served as
a member of the Board of Directors at Bauchi
State Television between 1992 and 1993.
Mrs. Katagum is familiar with the work of the
National Commission and that of UNESCO. Her
faithful and committed service and stewardship
spans over two decades.
