Dr. [Mrs.] Aisha Abubakar ABDULWAHAB

medicine and is currently working as a veterinary doctor
for the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja. She is also has
an outstanding joint PhD in public health from Ahmadu
Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria and the University
of Plymouth in the United Kingdom.
For her fellowship research project, which also
contributed to her PhD, Mrs. Abdulwahab studied the
prevalence of human and bovine tuberculosis (TB) in
the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Kaduna
State in Nigeria.
Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by members
of the Mycobacterium family of bacteria. It can affect
both humans and cattle and, despite being curable, still
kills some 2 million people every year worldwide. Humans
can be affected either through direct exposure to TB
patients or contaminated cattle carcasses, or via the
consumption of contaminated products such as
unpasteurized milk from infected cattle.
Mrs. Abdulwahab took samples of sputum from Tuberculosis
patients in hospitals; and lesions from infected cattle
slaughtered in abattoirs in the study area. She also
screened cattle on farms and took milk and blood
samples from those infected with TB. She thereafter
isolated and characterized the different strains of human
and bovine Mycobacterium present in the samples and
extracted their DNA. The DNA was analyzed using the
molecular biology facilities available at the University
of Plymouth. The results helped determine whether
there are genetic similarities between the human and
bovine Mycobacterium strains and whether
cross-contamination of TB between humans and
cattle is a possibility.
This information will be used to inform national
policy on tuberculosis control and in educative
programs for Nigerian cattle farmers.
