The Natural Sciences & Environment:
-The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary:
The Arabian Oryx, a species of long horned antelope, had been hunted to extinction in the region until its re-introduction in 1980. In the early 1990s, the Oryx population had reached over 400 and a conservation sanctuary was created in 1994 in the Wusta region by Royal Decree. In the same year, the 24758km2 area set to protect the oryx and other endangered species in a unique desert ecosystem was designated as UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. |
