Background and Justification: The Al Umari Mosque is an old basilica
built in the XIIth century, transformed into a mosque at the time of the Mameluks. which then underwent
changes until the XVIIIth century, under the Ottoman era. The mosque s minaret was reconstructed in 1930
after its collapse during the First World War. At present the monument is endangered by water infiltration and
the minaret, in particular. requires urgent consolidation.
Objectives: Preservation of the mosque and development of the whole surrounding
complex. Creation of job opportunities and training of workers (particularly young people) in the field
of restoration. Capacity building aimed at the safeguarding of historical monuments. .
Main activities: Training and restoration work. Preparation and publication of
brochures and documents aimed at both tourists and specialists .
