SC2.-SUPPORT FOR MARINE ENVIRONMENT AND COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT

PALESTINIAN EXECUTING AGENCY:	Council for Higher Education.
PROJECT STATUS:	Through the PEACE Programme, an inter-university network has been established to assist in the planned training and research activities. A MED-CAMPUS project request is being developed. A UNESCO Chair in Marine Science will be established.
DURATION:	36 months after obtention of funds .
TOTAL BUDGET:	US $ 30,000.00 by UNESCO to establish the UNESCO Chair .
FUNDS SECURED TO DATE:	US $ 220,000.00 Funds for 14 scholarships provided by the PEACE Programme EC Convention. Seed money provided by UNESCO for the 3 Chairs .
ADDITIONAL FUNDS REQUIRED:	US $ 3,050,000,00 .

• Background and Justification:The Coastal Zone is a potentially important Palestinian resource. Situated along the Gaza Strip, it is a dynamic area of human activity, which interacts with the sea, land, environment and their biological and non-living resources .
• Objectives:In order to secure the environmentally sound and sustainable development of the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian Centre for Marine Environment and Resources (CMER) will be established and an integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme (ICZM) will be developed .
• Main activities: Setting-up of the CMER. Training of Palestinian experts and undertaking of scientific research are planned during the preparatory phase. .
