Canadian Commission for UNESCO Discussions The Canadian education sector has taken a special interest in the work of the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century, having participated extensively in the North American workshop that preceded the fourth session of the Commission in Vancouver in April 1994. The Canadian Commission for UNESCO wished to capitalize on this interest and on the widespread discussion taking place in Canada on broad educational goals and methods by encouraging a debate on the report. A debate on the Delors report was organized on 28-29 November 1996 in Ottawa as part of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO’s 38th annual general meeting. A round-table discussion and several workshops took place on particular aspects of the report from a Canadian perspective. Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen, a member of the Delors Commission, gave a keynote speech. The report has been discussed at the meetings of numerous organizations. These have included the Council of Ministers of Education (its National Consultations on Education in May 1998 in St. John’s, Newfoundland featured Jacques Delors as keynote speaker), the Canadian International Development Agency (Delors commissioner Fay Chung spoke at a special debate in May 1997), and a joint convention of the Canadian School Boards Association and the Canadian Education Association in July 1998 (at which Delors commissioner Marie-Angélique Savané spoke. Discussion Guide To stimulate discussion of the Delors report and its conclusions, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO designed and produced a user-friendly discussion guide. "Learning together throughout our lives" ("Apprendre, ensemble, tout au long de nos vies") was launched at the annual meeting of the Canadian Teachers' Federation in July 1997, where a major part of one day's proceedings was devoted to a discussion of the report. The guide, or kit, contains a 4-page introduction and 19 information sheets (designed to be easily photocopied) to be used at conferences, seminars and similar fora. It serves to make people aware of the issues and recommendations contained in the report and to further the concept of lifelong learning.
