Address by H.E. Mr Mohammed Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

President Khatami: Once again I deem it necessary to extend my thanks to our esteemed guests and ladies and gentlemen. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Secretary-General, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and Mr. Picco, Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for the Year of Dialogue among Civilizations. I am confident that in this afternoon's session the distinguished scholars, thinkers and writers will engage in very fruitful discussions. God willing, this will be the beginning of a new phase in the betterment of human life, towards peace based on justice, which is mankind's most important need in the next century.
