International Year of Biodiversity 2010

From exhibitions to research projects, awareness-raising activities and a meeting held in a Biosphere Reserve, UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) are creative to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity 2010.

Proposed activities for ASPnet National Coordinators and schools

Showcase the UNESCO travelling exhibition on biodiversity
Involve students in scientific research on biodiversity (as in Peru and Portugal)
Identify local species for a school emblem (as in Costa Rica)
ASPnet prize for innovation and creativity (as in ASPnet Portugal)
Produce posters (as ASPnet Austria)
Spread messages on biodiversity through local school campaigns (as in ASPnet UK and Oman)
Create partnerships with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (as in Romania, Canada and Brazil)
Publish a collection of ASPnet projects on biodiversity: "An Insect Hotel" and other ideas (as ASPnet Austria)

Students of UNESCO Associated Schools committed to water preservation
Water quality, soil erosion, biodiversity and the impact of industry, urbanization or hydropower plants on the waterways were among the issues researched and presented by ASPnet students at a recent international conference in Siberia.

ASPnet schools worldwide celebrated Global Action Week 2010
ASPnet schools from all continents contributed to the success of the 2010 Global Action Week (19-25 April) with the theme "Financing quality public education for All."

Disaster preparedness training for UNESCO Associated Schools
